recently i've seen my rainbow sharks start picking fights with eachother. they seriously go at it. one of them has a tear in its top fin because of it and it looks like both have little patches where scales used to be. is there a reason why they do this? im afraid they will kill eachother

Rainbow Sharks can be quite aggressive to other fish, and VERY aggressive towards their own species, regardless of sex... for this reason, you should really only have one shark per tank, unless you have a massive, 150+ gallon tank with plenty of cover... It is likely that they are maturing now, and becoming more territorial... the fights will only get worse until one is finally killed, so your really do need to separate them...

Unfortunately, Rainbow Sharks can and will be very aggressive towards any other fish, including their own species. The best tankmates for these fish are top or mid-dwelling fish that will not venture down into your rainbow shark's territory. Seperating them is the best option if your tank is less than 40 gallons.

Like most other animals, some fish are very territorial.
They are simply proving dominance.
My guess is that your two fish are the same sex.
Generally, I keep my fish either in mated pairs or just one of each breed. We have South American and African cichlids and a community tank. Our rainbow shark is about five years old and lives in the African tank.

add some fake bridges and hollw rocks to let the other fish hide. after a wile the sharks become territorial. thats why. if the problem continues, buy another tank for the other fish. otherwise, youll end up with dead fish.

Get a tank divider and keep them separate for a month or so.This will let the one heal, and hopefully they will establish their territory on opposite sides of the tank. They are generally not aggressive fish, more territorial, you might even consider getting more if you have room.If you have more than 2,the more dominant fish won't just pick on one,the fighting gets more spread out amongst the others.
