Using a cell phone, contact the store you worked for and tell them you are a selfemployed contractor give them a fake name and ask them for a reference for your real name. I would think lows out of fear would not give you a bad reference. On the other hand I work for a large temp service and they sometime reply the person you are asking about is not hierable.

IF when you apply for a new job you sign a WAIVER that allows your old employer to say honestly how you did as an employee, the old employer can say what he wants and you can not sue him.

As a new employer, I would be suspicious of someone who worked for Lowes for 12 years and then left. For no other reason than the pension and health benefits a 12 year employee would have accumulated. I would definitely want to know why after 12 years you left a position. Were you turned down for a number of promotions due to poor work performance? Did you get caught doing drugs? Did you break one of the major company rules?

Why did you quit Lowes when you did not have another job lined up? That in itself is very suspicious.

while what they said is true, some managers have been known to not care that the company could get sued and they talk about ex employees.

i'd have a friend call them and pretend to be asking for a job reference. make sure they're calling from a phone that won't have the caller ID come up as their home or something. usually a cell phone is best.

Most employers do not give out opinions of past employees or their work. If and when a prospective new employer inquires, the old employer will only verify the dates of employment.
Old employers do that so they do not get sued.
