I got a pre paid cell phone when i was in the 6th grade. I didn't get a phone with an actual plan until i was in the 9th grade. It just depends on the circumstances. I got my cell phone so early so my parents could keep up with me because i was involved in a lot of activities and i still am.

I'd say the normal age is 14 or 15. There are the select few that get a cell phone in sixth or seventh grade, but I'd say the majority gets them in 8th or 9th grade.
In my opinion, a cell phone should be used for nothing else besides calling your parents. The internet is for IM-ing; PS2's are for video games; landlines are for talking with friends; iPods and CD players are for listening to music. If parents limited children to only calling their parents to pick them up from places or for emergencies, kids wouldn't want cell phones. However, parents are getting weaker and weaker and are just giving their children what they WANT, nowadays, instead of what they NEED.

Today, because of the fact that technology is growing at a rapid pace and cell phones are starting to get cheaper and cheaper depending on what make and model, parents are starting to give their children cell phones at younger ages. Also, because of everything that is going on, parents feel safer giving their children cell phones. I am fifteen and did not get a cell phone until the age of thirteen, but i honestly would recommend that a child should get a phone around the age of eleven or twelve.

I am guessing that within 2 years, cellphones will be implanted in the fetus 3 months before birth....gives them something to play with.

We finally caved and gave my 12 yr old a phone.... she was the only person in her grade at school that did not have one. That was not the reason though, she does all these sports stuff and its easier on us parents for her to call when she needs to be picked up from practice.

I believe that the average age now would be 6th grade. (I drive a school bus part time). There are a few 5th graders with phones, and a few 7th graders without phones, but most get them in 6th grade. (as opposed to 3 years ago when it was when kids started to drive)

Well over here they are called mobile phones not cells phones :)

I got mine for my first year of highschool (which over here is grade eight and the year you turn 13) and I only ever use it really to call mum when and is cancelled or I need her to pick me up.

If they live in a small town, and go out a lot, as young as 10. But usually, at around 12-15, especially if they have a job or volunteer.
