Sometimes I think it can be. But then sometimes we cry when we are laughing.

Crying is not an emotion. Emotions are mental. Crying is physical.

Is crying caused by selfish emotions/attitudes? Sometimes. E.g. a child may become very upset because it dropped it's toy. This sort of selfish crying has lead to a social ban on crying, especially in men.

However crying can be caused when you really care deeply about someone and you see them suffer. This is very unselfish. If only everyone was like this to everyone else.

It can be used in a selfish way, but I don't think that all crying should be considered as selfish.
Also, crying is not an emotion.

Well, crying isn't an emotion. The only thing that could make crying selfish is the reasoning behind it.

No. As one poster said crying is not an emotion. Perhaps tears are produced as a result of an emotion, but that has more to do with "association/conditioning". Even brain damaged people will cry and other common interpreted displays of emotions.

crying isn't an emotion, it's an expression of emotion. and most of the time, it's involuntary. those who do it purposefully, for pity or to get their way, are a little selfish. but those who cry in response to grief, anxiety, unhappiness, joy, anger, or anything else are simply expressing their emotion and cannot in any way be faulted for that.

If you cry because you are jealous of somebody and the attention they are getting then yes it can be selfish. But if you cry for your own reasons then no.
