I use the baby clippers that came in the American Red Cross grooming kit.. they have a guard on them so you don't cut too far. I've been using them on my son since about 2 weeks of age.. but I don't do it as often as I should because I have to do it when he sleeps.

As a newborn, I used a nail file.
By the time she was 4 months of age, I started to clip them when she napped. That works well and she is sound asleep.
A friend of mine does it in the car- after they stop she clips her baby's nails. Her nail clipper is attached to the key ring.

I have been clipping my son's nails since he was a week old...I got tired of being scratched and didn't have a nail file. My grandmother told me that the best way she found to trim her children's and grandchildren's nails when young was to simply bite the nail. I have used this a couple times when I couldnt' find the clippers...that way you're not putting anything sharp next to fingers and there's no potential of cutting them. Try both ways and see what works best for you.

I used the baby nail clippers while she was taking a nap. If I tried it while she was awake, I was worried about nipping her when she moved (which she did a lot of!). While she slept, I would very gently clip her nails & file the edges. If she awoke before filing, that was O.K. I could file while she was awake, but not clip. Good luck!

I use baby clippers, and do it while I am breastfeeding. She is so distracted and intent on eating that she does not care what i do with her hands:)

i know this sounds gross but its easier to gently bite them off. my grandmother gave me that tip. at that age the nails are quite soft and its easy to just pick at them gently after bathtime, they sometimes just break off.
