can you explain to me why I3- is linear?

VSEPR. 14 electrons. 7 pairs. Pentagonal bipyramid. Lone pairs in the least crowded positions, since they are more repulsive than bonds. Bonds in the remaining two positions, which are top and bottom. And there you have it.

Well first off, its a molecule, not an ion. The reason I3- is linear is because of the lone pair push from the non-bonding electrons on the center iodine. The push from the three non-bonding electron pairs cancel their opposing push, maintaining the linear structure.
