I am trying to get the mothball smell out of a 40 year old christening outfit. So far I have washed it in a pot of hot water with Rit white wash laundry treatment & detergent. I rinsed it & now have it soaking in the sink with detergent. I guess I'll soak it in fabric softener next. If anyone has any knowledge on what to do to get the smell out, I would really appreciate it. I am trying to avoid taking it to the dry cleaner.

Try soaking it with Febreze, I mean take the sprayer off the bottle and pour it right on till the fabric is soaked. Then hang it up and let it airdry. You could also try using a large box of baking soda and sprinkling it thourougly over the material, rolling it up and putting it in a large plastic bag for a couple of days, then laundering it, baking soda and all, with detergent. Both these methods have worked for me to remove stubborn smells.
