Detroit and Ottawa are on fire right now. At the moment I would have to give the slight edge to Detroit. While not the most physical team in the NHL, they are more a physical team than Ottawa, and we all saw what happened last year when Ottawa came up against a very physical Anaheim. I was at game 5 and Ottawa got thumped.

The Ottawa Senators are the cream of the crop this year. Ottawa seems to be really focused after losing the Stanley Cup to Anaheim last year 4 games to 1 by going 14-2 to start the season...even with Jason Spezza missing the last 6 games to a groin injury. No Stanley Cup hangover here.
Detroit has gotten off to a great start as well, and although you don't want to disrespect them, I question how much toughness they have to make a long playoff run. They always seem to have a great regular season and fizzle out in the first or second round of the playoffs.
After that it is a crapshoot. Anything can happen. In the West my sleepers are Colorado and Minnesota. In the East, my sleepers are the Rangers, Hurricanes, and (don't laugh) the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs have more depth than people think, a lot of speed, and a power play that is #1 in the leauge at almost 30% (I'm a Canadiens fan so sue me). Anything can happen in the playoffs, so don't count on regular season stats.

Ottawa is a better team than Detroit right now.
They have a better goal differential in their wins
They have a better shot differential
They are a more dominant team (71% of play in opposition end - 1st in NHL, Detroit is at 63%, 3rd)
We'll just have to wait and see what happens on January 12th in Ottawa when the two teams meet.

The Wings are the hottest team in the league right now.
They got the best player in the league at the moment with Zetterberg and arguably the best line.
Their defense is pretty stacked as well.
The Wings also have a better Power Play and Penalty Kill

Best at the moment Ottawa (that's from a Red Wings fan) but there is a lot of hockey to be played so other teams could find form also

I think the Red Wings look the best right now. I have to bench my fantasy goalies anytime their team is playing Detroit because it's almost guaranteed that the Wings will get 3 or 4 goals.

Detroit or Ottowa no doubt. Which one? I'm going to say Detroit. They've already been on two west coast trips, badly outshooting there opponent and are playing very, very consistently and have great depth. Plus I'm a wings fan... but the Senators are great too.

It would not surprise me at all if the Red Wings and the Senators meet for the Final round.

I think Islanders are looking to start off pretty well, they have only played 12 games and they're 8-4. Not a bad start at all.

Detroit...as much as it pains me to say it
BUT it's only the beginning of the season. Everything could change...pulling for the sharks to take that one to heart...
