Psychology is on offshoot from philosphy. Some of the key thinkers of psycholgy were actually philsophers.
From philosophy, many things have prouted. Our laws, our moral grounding, what is right and wrong in society. Psychology only takes that concept and whittles it down to the single unit, the person.
When we understand how a human mind works, we can understand many things. Why humans kill, why humans rape, why humans suffer from depression. Through this understanding we can make out lives better by trying to prevent this from happening.
Through psychology, companies can learn to make their employees happier, which creats a better work environment, which in turn creats more productivity increasing profits.
Through psychology, we are able to develope a profile of those who kill and with this knowledge able to find this person, or at the very least figure out where they might strike next.
Through psychology, children who have been victims of all sorts of hideous thing have been taught how to deal with this to go on and lead a relitvly normal life as an adult.
Through psychology, marriages have been salvaged, family units remained intact.
Psychology may seem pointless, but it makes you think. It makes people create ideas, which gives us progress. Without it, and other seemingly pointless subjects, people will be less intellegent, we may not progress, and then we have life at a stand still.

Life's big joke. We can choose anything in the world to do. In general, right. Well, then choose. It amazes me to see that most people are too serious about and don't pick something to do that is fun.
