i need to know what type of rubber for a college project?

In most cases, a polyurethane will work. Polyurethanes come in many different hardness, which are rated on a "Shore" scale.

While originally they were made from rubber, now I think they are made from a synthetic form of rubber, because the real stuff cracks and falls apart.
