3x - 5 = x + 3
i know x=4 but how do i solve for it?
another one:
5x = 4+x
x=1. solve for it?
really the thing im having trouble with is when you have variables on both sides of the "=" sign

You can always add or subtract the same thing on both sides of the = sign. You can also multiply or divide each side of the = by the same thing. The trick is to pick the right operation and quantity :)

3x - 5 = x + 3

We don't want an x on the right, so subtract x from each side

3x - 5 - x = x + 3 - x which simplifies to
2x - 5 = 3

Now I want to get rid of the 5 on the left, so add five to both sides

2x - 5 + 5 = 3 + 5 which simplifies to
2x = 8

Almost there - now divide both sides by 2

x = 4

And there is the answer.

ok im in algebra 2.

when you have the variable on both sides you add or subract the variable with all numbers that are attached [ex. 3x] if the equation is 1+ 2x = x - 3 what you do is subtract the x on the right side of the equation and subracted it from the 2x on the other side which leave x. then you subract 1 from the left side and subtract it from the 3 on the right side. which gives you 2. so x = 2.

on your problems you listed...

3x - 5 = x + 3
-x -x
2x -5 = 3
+5 +5
2x = 8
/2 /2
x=4

5x = 4 +x
-x -x
4x = 4
/4 /4
x=1.

you bring the x's to one side and the constants to the other side

in the first problem, you subtract x from both sides and + 5 to both sides

3x - 5 - x = x + 3 - x , the x's will concal from the right side
2x - 5 = 3
2x -5 + 5 = 3 + 5, the 5's will cancel on the left side
2x = 8, then you divide both sides by 2, to get x by itself to get the answer.

x=4.

you do the same for the second problem.

5x = 4+ x
5x -x = 4 +x -x
4x=4, divide both sides by 4 to solve for x.
x=1

Anything you do to one side of the equation, you need to do to the other.
3x - 5 = x + 3
In order to solve for this, you need to combine all of the x's, so you subtract x from both sides.
3x - 5 - x = x + 3 - x
2x - 5 = 3
Then you need to get the 2x by itself, so you add 5 to both sides.
2x - 5 + 5 = 3 + 5
2x = 8
Then, to get x alone, you divide by 2.
2x/2 = 8/2
x = 4

Next problem:
5x = 4 + x
Get x's together: 5x - x = 4 + x - x
4x = 4
Solve for x: 4x/4 = 4/4
x=1

I hope that helps!

You have to take left side equation and right side equation.separately. Now when you proceed with the sum., you are going to bring what is x . The easiest method is you have rewrite the whole sum like this 3x-1x=5 +3, another step 2x is equal to eight and therefore x is equal to 4. The same way you have to do. That is all ,Yours,\

2x = 8
x = 4

5x [- x] = 4 + x [- x]
4x = 4
x = 1
