I worked retail also for a long time and it cost me friends , relationships and a lot of time. I finally quit and vowed never to go back and I haven't.

Dude1: "Uh, yeah?"
Me: "Hi, do you have 'X product' in stock?"
Dude1: "Uhhh...yeah, we might have it."
Me: "Errrmmm...are you...suuurrre?"
Dude1: "Ahhh...yeah, sure."
Me: "Okay, thanks."
Dude1: *click*
1 hour later...
Me: "Hi, I was told you have 'X product' in stock. I don't see it anywhere. Is it in the stock room, maybe?"
Dude2: "Uhhh...everything we have is on display"
Me: "Okay...um, so DO you have 'X product'"
Dude2: "Uuuhhiiii don't think so."
Me: "Well...is there some computerized inventory you can check?"
Dude2: "Yeah I guess." *walks away*
10 minutes later...
*Dude2 walks by*
Me: "Ummm...so?"
Dude2: "Wha...oh yeah. Hi."
Me: *silence* "Do you have it?"
Dude2: "hahaha...naw. We don't have THAT here! It's not in the computer anymore! Hahaha...sorry."
Me: *losefaithinhumanity*
Nothing personal. :P It IS mostly the teenagers, though.
