How can I tell which type to buy if I order over internet. the printer is epson stylus 740.

Most computer stores should stock USB-to-parallel adapters. Any one should work.

You can't simply connect the old printer to the usb port because the printer uses "parallel" data transfer method, but the usb uses a "serial" method.
It needs some type of adapter to trasform the serial data which comes out of the computer into parallel data, then send it to the printer..
(I don't know even if such adapter is available in the market)
