You are 100% ok to transport a freezer on its back as long as you let it stand upright without the power on for about 24 hours. This allows the refrigerant to run back into the condenser/pump before starting up.

Should be OK, so long as you put the freezer into it's new position at home, then leave it overnight before switching it on.
The reason for this is because when you turn any refrigeration appliance on its side, or even tilt it, the liquid gas will tend to dissipate around the cooling tubes, leaving little or none in the compressor. If you then switch on the empty compressor, this can damage it, maybe not immediately, but certainly enough to shorten it's life. Imagine starting a cold car engine with no oil in it.

Yes, how long you stand it depends on the age. If it is an older model then you will need to stand it for 24 hours to let the re-fridgerant settle If however it is a fairly new one 1 year to 18 months old then you should get away with letting it stand for only 12 hours. Personally i always leave mine for 24 hours if i have moved house.

Good Luck.

EDIT. I bought a new freezer 6 months ago and the fins are enclosed at the back, perhaps this was designed to prevent damage during transit.

It sounds like this is an upright freezer and you only have room to load it horizontally. As long as you load it carefully and don't damage any cooling coils and let it sit idle for 24 hours before starting the cooling process it should not harm it. The sitting idle for 24 hours allows the freon to stabilize. I've done this many times during my lifetime and never had a problem with any of the appliances. Even hauling it upright destabilizes freon to a degree, but not nearly as much as laying it horizontally. The freon in a freezer is not the same as an auto.

Transporting it is not a problem. Just leave it standing for 24 hours, to let the gases settle.

It should be fine, but lie it on its front not on its back. This is to protect the heat exchange at the rear. Make sure it is at least 24 hours before turing on to allow the gases to settle.

No problem -done it a couple of times - careful you don't damage the radiator fins onthe back - try not to shake it about too much -

Why would you want to lie in the back of the car is the freezer looking for the front seat?

I WAS ALWAYS TOLD TO NEVER PUT A FREEZER ON ITS SIDE BECAUSE THE OIL WILL RUN OUT OF THE COMPRESSOR AND WHEN YOU PLUG IT BACK IN YOU MIGHT BURN UP THE COMPRESSOR.
