The 2 party system generally ensures that you will get a majority vote for one candidate or the other, though not always. It usually allows government to move forward because in cases of gridlock, the majority party can take the lead. But it stifles debate and forces a widely diverse country to be represented by only 2 ideologies. Furthermore, it create division and bitterness as the 2 sides battle for control of government. I would like to see the presidential race run like the Houston Mayoral race. In Houston, candidates for mayor are not allowed to declare a party affiliation. This makes a lot of sense to me since they are running to represent the whole city not just their party. We ought to elect presidents the same way. Congress can still be as political as it wants but The president needs to represent everyone.

Politics and beliefs of US citizens are not black and white, but the two party system is. The majority of citizens are not represented by either the Democrats or the Republicans. Where does that leave them? Unrepresented, and apathetic towards participation in the system...the two party system forces people to lump all their beliefs together and pick the party that is closest to what they believe....that sucks. Do some research into Japan's system, and the number of parties that have active representation in their government.

two party system pros - checks and balances prevent many bad-for-America laws. Cons - sometimes it's hard to get anything through congress, because they're more concerned about their own parties than the good of the country.

The 2 party system is horrible. Nobody is properly represented, and third parties have no chance in anything and it's quite unfair really. The term "Democrats" these days is a complete contradiction. Every democrat in the US serves under a Republic. We've never been a Democracy. Democrats are not REAL Democrats, but liberal republicans. Basicly we have Liberal republicans and Conservitave republicans. Thats our 2 party system in a Republic government. The term "Democracy" is just an illusion. Europe has a 6 party system that is WAAAAAY better!!! You might get properly represented for once in that system!

For any third or more parties to develop it would take many elections before the become independent of either party. Each of the primary parties would try to shame them into taking votes from their party and causing it to lose. Before a new party could actually function independently it would take years of development to declare it completely different than the other two.

The two party system is flawed and was never supposed to be a facet of american politics. The founding fathers absolutely hated that idea. Currently the Republican party and the Democratic Party (Democratic translates to mob law) are extremely similar and at the same time do not reflect a 10th of the public. One is supposed to be conservative of liberal but neither are either. This is political science, the practice of influencing public opinion.
Infact if you are able to find differences then you are only asking someone's opnion. As far as voting records and lobbying are concerned they ARE the same.

If you had more like other country's you could find total grid lock and then have the entire government come to a halt just like when the left has shut down our government many times.
