I've heard that Harvard was the first university.

In school we had to do projects on the 13 colonies, and one of the posters mentioned Harvard as being the first.

Edit: I checked on Wikipedia and Harvard really was the first. (1636 - while the other 3 universities were founded about 100 years later or so)

Harvard was the first institution of higher learning in the US. William and Mary was the second.

However, not all colleges are universities. While both of those schools are universities now -- The University of Pennsylvania was the first institution of higher learning to become a university in what is now the US.
