there is this little round container thing that came with my oboe. whats it for?

its not a reed case... its really short and small..... its about as big as a thumnail..

Maybe it's a little container into which you put some water for soaking your reeds. Just an idea.

If there's some gooey stuff in the container, that is for smearing on the joints of the different parts of the oboe to stop them drying out and being difficult to assemble/disassemble.

That is the reed case. You will need to buy a decent double reed from a music store since you do not know how to make your own.
