Open up a word document:
To insert a special character:
Click where you want to insert the character.
On the Insert menu, click Symbol, and then click the Special Characters tab.
Double-click the character you want to insert.
Click Close.

If you are using a program like WORD on WIn XP they come up in Word by clicking Insert and then Symbols. They show you a bunch and you click on the one you want and then hit accept.
