The Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi was opposed to the Confucian scholars who wanted a return to the old feudal order. In 213 B.C. he caused all books not dealing with agriculture, medicine or historical Ch'in records in the imperial library burned. He grew more and more distrustful and isolated from his people late in his reign.
