And yes, it IS that serious. We've got 6 people in this house, 4 of them kids, and the laundry piles are taller than the two youngest kids.

And we're going to the store tonight but I want to get the laundry started.

add baking soda to a little dish liquid...and add 1 cup vinegar to final rinse

baking soda boosts dish liquid. too much dish liquid will leave you a HUGE SUDSY MESS...lol the vinegar will rinse out the detergents and it will protect the color..it also acts as a natural fabric softener...;o)

I'm out of laundry detergent! What can I use to substitute it?

One time I waited three weeks to do the laundry it was horrible. just wait a bit do not use anything else. Ask a neighbor for a cup of laundry soap and borrow if you need some. I had to do that a couple of times.
Pay back with a cup of home made coffee.
Mother of two age 35.
Joanne hope it helps

You can use dish soap, the hand wash kind. Be carefull only to use a little bit because it will suds up like crazy and you might want to do an extra rinse cycle.

You could also try about 1/2 cup of baking soda.

Uhm... don't substitute anything for it. Go to the store and buy some more laundry detergent. Is it that serious you're willing to use dish soap or shampoo?

DO NOT USE DISH SOAP IN A WASHING MACHINE THAT AGITATES. Go to the store and get some laundry detergent.

shampoo is typically gentle enough for delicates but it might not get really heavy stains out. At least your clothes will smell good! I'm in college so I've had the same problem before. Be careful with how much or how little you use.

A little bit of shampoo or hand dishwashing liquid always does the trick for me. I wouldn't recommend this for HE washers though

my sis uses a half cup of baking soda and just a couple of drops of dawn when she is in a pinch...don't add more that 2 drops of dawn or you will have a big bubble machine.
