You have to open the flume. You can open it halfway or all the way depending on how much heat you want to keep in your house. You can use the self starting fire logs, like dura flame, on the top of your log pile and it will get the other logs burning.
You may notice that the air in your home will be dry so it is a good idea to put a pot of water on the stove to simmer when you use the fireplace. You can add cinnamon or spices to the water to help keep the smell of the fire out of your home.
Good luck and enjoy your fireplace.

If you've never used the fireplace before it would be a good idea to have it inspected before using it. A cracked flue can lead to a fire that could burn the whole house down. Once you know that is fine the first thing you'll need to do is to make sure the flue is open so the smoke can escape through the chimney instead of into the room. When lighting the fire, start with paper and small bits of wood and slowly add larger pieces as the flames get larger. The real heat will come once the larger pieces have burned into red-hot coals, keep them pushed together into a pile and you'll be amazed at how long they'll stay hot. You need to make sure the damper is open. after arranging the wood you will be burning, from small to larger pieces on top (and possibly some paper), hold a lit piece of paper up near the flue. This will get a draft started so the smoke doesn't come back into the house. When you see the smoke from the paper going up the chimney, light the wood. Do not use flammable liquids to start the fire.

1. open the damper!!! there is either a chain or a rod to pull to open it. If you don't you will smoke up the entire house.
2. Never use either charcoal lighter, gasoline, kerosene or any other fuel product to start a fire.
3. get a soft short piece of pine lumber and whittle it into small pieces.
4. Put this starter on a couple of sheets of crumpled up newspaper. Not the funnies, they are colored and are slightly toxic to burn.
5. Stack a couple of logs over the starter and newspapers.
6. Strike a kitchen match on the match box strip and light the newspaper.
7. put the spark screen up.

Assuming you have had the chimney inspected and it is clean, Sue has the best answer.
The newspaper helps get the draft started by giving a bit of warm air to rise of the chimeny as well as getting the wood going.

Please don't listen to the First idiot, ttlondon!! Unless you want to burn down your house! I have always used about 10 or 12 pieces of crumpled up news paper, then some small "kindling" (broom stick sized and smaller), then one or two split logs about as big around as your arm. Keep an eye on it and when its roaring nicely, throw on some more logs.
BUT never burn any gasoline or diesel in your fireplace or stove!! What a dumbas*!

O.K. listen up, melt some candles and dip paper towels in the melted wax and role or wad them up then you only have to light one in your fireplace and add small pieces of wood then when the wood ignites add larger chunks until your fire is satisfactory. The old paper towel and candle wax trick is a excellent way to start campfires too.

The BlueFlame Lighter is for starting your fire. After wood has lighted you can turn lighter off.

Nothing. Just put like a gallon of petrol on to make sure it won't die - fire-starters are a pure waste of money. With petrol you will clear the chimney at the same time. Jokes
