Is there a reason why in the NHL many goalies numbers are in the 30's? Or is it just coincidence?

Hockey tradition was that the main goalies wore number one back in the old days and was listed first on the roster. As a result after many years many teams have retired that number. The second or back up goalie traditionally got the last number on the roster which for years was 30. This tradition has carried through to today. There is no rule that a goalie has to wear a specific number. Many simply choose to don the number of their childhood heroes. For many current goalies that would mean Patrick Roy.

Coincidence. 1 is the most common number for goalies over all, but the NHL is a big exception to that.

its a number recognition... like most great players 99 88 66 etc. and also the goalies are usually at the end of the rosters instead of beginning.

i think of that those numbers have basically been utilized by employing goalies constantly, form of like a convention. it relatively is not constrained like the NHL, goalies would be any form they elect. i assume they do exactly no longer elect to be too diverse.
