I did not see it because it was pressed down so low. I ran over it and it made a loud BANG and stopped. I tried starting it about 15 min. later, and it just made a low sputtering noise. What can I do? We have NO money to replace it or get it repaired...do you think I ruined it?

I don't see how that is stupid. I am saying that I cannot afford for it to be replaced, but I would still like to know if there is a chance it's ruined!

Here's what can happen:
You shear the break away pins that hold the blade,
You can shear the keyway on the blade end of the shaft,
You can bend the shaft that holds the blade on,
You can shear the keyway on the flywheel, which will throw the timing off and it won't start
Everything can be fixed easily by the homeowner EXCEPT the bent blade shaft. They can't be safely straightened.

You may have bent the cutting blades. Try this, but be VERY careful. Disconnect it from the electricity supply if it's electric or disconnect the spark plug if it's petrol. Now tip it up and see if the blades will turn by hand. If they do, it's the motor that's damaged. If they don't turn easily you may see where they are rubbing and be able to bend them back. Or there might be a piece of the stake jammed up in there.

The drive belt may have snapped from the sudden force of being stopped so quickly. It may also have put a lot of strain on the drive shaft. The belt will be very cheap to get repaired and you could find something to work in its place. If the shaft or cutting blades are bent its gone.

Saying you have no money to get it repaired and asking if its ruined is a stupid question - it's not just going to magically start again - it needs to be repaired properly.
