I'm no expert, but this could be a good thing if they go the way of the European Union. Lately they have been electing social democratic leaders. The only problem I have is that Chavez scares people and they assume he's a radical leftist because of the things he says, but I really think he's a social democrat who believes in a mixed economy.

Vincente Fox stated on Larry King that they were about to go through with the South American Union before Chavez got in the way,
obviously, they are mad that someone wants sovereignty for their own country, he's not going along with the UN, World Bank, IMF, CFR agenda,
so you know they are going to have even more of a smear fest.
I expect what our government usually does, they will stage yet another coup in an attempt to overthrow him and put in a puppet regime.
Also on the table is the North American Union,
I wonder when they will be switching our currency...

Most South American countries seem to have enough trouble just trying to hold themselves together, between dictators, revolutions, civil strife, crime and lack of economic development.
But, there already /is/ an alliance among the states of the Americas, including Latin America & the USA (all the democracies of the hemisphere, in fact), it's called the Organization of American States. There had also been ongoing negotiations towards a free-trade agreement among the same states, the Summit of the Americas, but I haven't heard much about it in recent years....

I think it's possible, and it would certainly be great if it occurred, but, those folks all have their own agendas, and each country's problems are different from their neighbors.
My idea,...is for U.S. to form a Pan-American Construction Corps, and build an interstate,(or Inter-continental) highway, from the American Southwest, to Tierra Del Fuego.
We could use a labor force comprised of illegal immigrants, non-violent convicts, and volunteers. An international committee would choose each country's engineers and construction companies, to lessen corruption, and ensure consistency in standards and design.
Much like a railroad, settlements along the way would be needed, and these new towns would be built "green", and use local materials and staff. This would give local citizens a chance to interact with North Americans, and each other, in a new and positive way.
Huge multi-nationals in America would be required to donate equipment and training for this construction corps, and maybe get some more tax breaks for their help.
This type of highway would provide transportation and communications to areas that have never had either, and would aid in the modernization, and economic integration of our whole hemisphere.
