OMG! When I first got married we had a tree and I put angel hair on it, it was so pretty. I thought if i washed it, we could use it another year. Not having much money and since it was white, I washed it with our whites, underwear! We both had rashes in strategic places for a long time too! It has taken many years to live it down too.....

In about 1946/47 I decorated our Christmas Tree (artificial and bought about 1931) with pieces of angel hair that had been brought to us, I believe by RAF friends who were using it in aircraft repair. It was indeed fibreglass and did cut my fingers. Of course this was 'just after the war' not that I was then aware of this as more than a phrase, it was my childhood and I thought everything had always been the same and always would be. Christmas included.
You kind of think that angel hair stopped being sold because of health and safety reasons but I bet it was because it was superceded by better more profitable products. If it was around today it would probably carry a warning "This is not a toy, should be held in gloved hands and may contain glass, oh and nuts too"
By the way the 60s were great but then I have been stupidly happy for most of my life.

RE:
Does anyone remember "angel hair"?
When I was growing up around Christmas (maybe early 1960's), my parents would buy angel hair to decorate the Christmas tree. It was pretty to look at, but if you got it on your hands, it felt like glass. I think it was made out of fiberglass. I'm glad they don't use it nowadays.

I used to use it. The lights looked beautiful behind Angel Hair. It was itchy though when you got it on you, which I always did no matter how careful I was. I didn't know it was no longer used. I've been in a RV for over ten years and don't put up a tree anymore.

Yes, I remember angel hair, it was really pretty. It was so sharp we quit using it and started using icecicle strands instead. Now when I put up a tree I don't use either and it's alot easier to clean up. I also like the tree with just lights, ornaments and garland.

The only Angel hair I remember was part of our tree topper. She was an angel...her wings were wavy and thick. Mama always said the wings were made of Angel Hair. The kids weren't allowed to touch the angel.

AHHH, yes...nothing like the feel of angel hair at Christmas time! Itchy & Scratchy might have just gotten their names from these "memories" of our youth! Add that aluminum tree with pom-pom frons, a color wheel, & a rotating tree stand & you have what was once seen as a modern no-fuss, easy clean-up yearly holiday event that was ever so sterile! Modern, yet sterile. Perhaps we were more "green" in those days then we realized!
