I don't see why they defend him either. He is everything that is bad about baseball. He doesn't care about winning. He only cares about his $$$$. I really hope no team signs him and he's forced to lower his price.

With A-rod there are several issues!
1. His pay (highest in baseball and opted out to be higher?) The regular folks trying to make ends meet can't understand that. Personally I say go for it and good luck, there is nobody forcing these stupid teams from giving him 50 mil a season.
2. his pay vs performance- obviously the best player in baseball in terms of regular season simly monster numbers
3. his pay vs. postseason performance! - This is waht killed yankee fans! The guy disappeared to some hole come playoffs!
4. A-rod vs himself- The I am the man but I need help being the man attitude please man which is it?
5. A-rod vs media- he just doesn't seem comfortable under the media spotlight
6. A-rod vs Buschleague antics!- ALCS 2004 slapping the glove, shouting at the 3B in Toronto and just A-rod being A-rod
People don't seem to like to rout for the guy. Pick your reason or make up your own! Regular Season you can't argue with his stats. People confuse their emotions with the the on field performance!
As far as opting out I believe it is a response to how Yankee fan/media treated the bum, clearly his wife has heard about it! The money issus is a close 2nd!

It is hard not to get sensative with a guy that has not one worry to worry about but just how much he will get and how he will spend it (30Million how many mistress more can I have?)...we are sitting at home worrying about the bills that go with life and just getting by....arrogance by one brings out the "sensitiveness" in all of us.....kind'a hard to give a guy a break ...except maybe his jaw when he comes across as "insentive"....

I think if you say he sucks, most people would differ because, well, you'd be wrong. He doesn't perform well in the playoffs, that's a historical accuracy, but one of the best players playing right now, can not suck (by definition)
If you say he is greedy, then some will agree and some will defend him because he is only getting what he can (and will often bring up the fact that if someone offered you more for your job you would take it)
It is a combination of greed, stupidity (on the owners part) and arrogance.
The defense of 'you would take more money if offered' is faulty for a number of reasons.
Let's say the argument with Arod is between 18 and 36 mil. (double the salary)
The difference between your family making $30 a year and $60 k a year is the difference between renting and owning your own home.
50K a year to 100k a year maybe the difference between a community college and university.
80k to 160k may be the difference between both parents working and only one, so the other can look after kids.
The difference between 18 mil and 36 mil is.... 6 more $2.5 mil houses a year?
an "F U" tee shirt for Mrs. Rodriquez with solid gold embroidery vs. solid platinum embroidery?
Having enough money to live for 150 years (on one year's salary) or living for 300 years?
Claiming to take care of 20 relatives, vs, 40 relatives?
On the point of 'you would take the money', it's not apples and oranges.
If my work wanted to increase my salary from 100k to 5 mil dollars, it seems like a great deal. But if they said that by doing so, they would lay off 100 people, there is a moral and ethical dilemma to contend with.
For the people that would simply jump at the money, they lack those morals or ethics.
When Arod signed that huge contract with Texas and now represented 33% of their total player budget, Rodriguez complained that they couldn't win if he didn't have a supporting cast.
Unfortunately, at that price, he was to be the star AND the supporting cast.
the only defense I could legimately see people making for Arod is if people say he sucked.
When it comes to money, since we, the fans, pay him without having any say in the matter, I think it's ok to criticize.
That being said, as a baseball fan, each of us should contact our supported ML team and tell them that you won't support their team if they sign Arod (if you find the contract demands obscene)
If you are ok paying $222,222 a game for one person, then feel free to support him.

I don't care if someone criticizes Rodriguez. However, I will stick up for him when people say stupid stuff about him, or make claims without anything to back up their statements.
Why do I defend him? I don't know - why do others feel the need to criticize him, often without merit?

I do not why either because he is a great regular season player but until he plays well in money time and October time then may be he is making too much money and a paycut may motivate him to perform when it is time to shine . He could give me some of his money . I am sure he would not miss it.
