Currently the most effective way to remove spyware and adware infections is to use one of the many spyware protective software programs.
A good anti spyware/adware program will do 3 things that will clean your computer and then keep it clean. It will scan your computer to discover where the problem is, then it will run through and completely remove spyware from your system and then it will run on your computer in the background, defending you against future spyware attacks.

The traditional pair, very good, are Spybot Search-and-Destroy plus Lavasoft AdAware (both free). Keep them both up-to-date, and run often, and you'll be purdy safe.

I've also added, for peace-of-mind, a new kid on the block. AVG just came up with a free Anti-spyware component. Go to http://www.grisoft.com and fetch a copy. It comes as a 30-day trial version during which it runs automatically and updates itself automatically. After that, you have to update it by hand, and run scans by hand. But still, I think it's worth the effort. (I have AVG Anti-virus and "Anti-rootkit", too).
