Without question, Buck Owens' Buckaroos would be among the first mentioned. They made, I believe, three albums on their own. And, they had Don Rich. His presence alone was enough to raise a band's rating.

Porter Wagoner's Wagonmasters were also outstanding. There was the terrific three-part harmony that never faltered, the unique sound of Buck Trent's electric banjo, and the entertaining Mac Magaha on fiddle.

I know the late Hank Thompson's Brazos Valley Boys were voted best band for a number of years in a row. They certainly had a great sound, and I would list them among my favorites.

And, I don't think it's possible to have a conversation about great bands without including the "classic line-up" era of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys (1945-48). How can you possibly go wrong with Chubby Wise, Cedric Rainwater, Lester Flatt, and Earl Scruggs?!

I'm with Tex. The Texas Troubadours... simply because I grew up listening to their music and, later, playing back-up for Mr. E.T.

Although not commonly called a "Group", The Sons of the Pioneers played all their own instruments for Roy Rogers.

Another wonderful, early group were The Lightcrust Doughboys from Ft. Worth. They had a very distinctive sound that Pappy O'Danial found pleasing to the ear. They also made Pappy loads of money !!!!

Well Alabama may not be considered classic country to some, but they are to me because I was born in the 80's. I happen to think they had some great songs, as well as a lot of staying power. Great band all around and great in person as well!

I,m gonna go with Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. His sound was unique back in the days. and he invented Western Swing.
Second would be The Texas Troubadours their sound was awesome and they started the Honky Tonk sound I love so much today.
