If your car has a coolant recovery tank near a radiator end tank. Keep it half full of 50/50 Antifreeze and distilled water. If it's necessary to fill this tank more than once per yr. have your cooling system pressure checked by an independent mechanic, radiator shop or a new car dealership.

First off, remember that water is only part of the equation to keep your car cool or to prevent overheating. Your should add a mixture of coolant and water to make sure the engine's coolant doesn't freeze in extremely cold weather or boil in warm weather. You should add coolant to the radiator whenever the inside vents of the radiator are visible. You should only add coolant to the coolant reservoir (it is usually a plastic container that looks like the windshield washer reservoir). To find this just follow the hose that goes into the top of the radiator (right below the radaiator cap). Whenever the coolant becomes low in the engine, a hose that runs into the coolant reservoir used vacuum to draw coolant into the radiator. Remember to never open the radiator cap until the engine is cooled because there is a good chance you will be scalded when the hot coolant excapes through the top of the radiator.

I know this is a long answer but wanted to be thorough.
Hope this helps.

a low coolant light should come on and if it doesn't you can check the overflow tank and it usually has a mark for when cold and one for hot.
