Been doing it that way for years, unfortunately. Each last minute admirable (sometimes remarkable) success reinforces the bad behavior. So, it's a hard habit to break until you majorly screw up.
But, if you are smart and talented, and motivated, you can usually time it well enough to keep pulling it off, and keep getting accolades. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I don't work better under the pressure of a deadline . However, in college I would sometimes put off most of the work until the end . Of course , the quality usually suffered but it was only for school so it didn't really matter.
In the real world , I make sure I leave time to complete projects with patience so the quality doesn't have that rushed with corner's cut look to it .

No, that doesn't work for me at all. Funny enough though, most of my friends are like that, they work very well under pressure.
As for me, I function well when organised, tasks are performed in timely manner (preferrably completed before scheduled), and have enough time left for any adjustments or in case of emergencies. I always maintain myself on top of things when it comes to work, because I expect the unexpected. Also, deadlines don't inspire me to be creative, which is important when I'm writing a script or practicing a dance routine.
I do wish at times, that I had the ability to create under pressure, as my best friend does for example, he's an artist/creative director, most of his best work has been under intense amount of pressure, which if I would have to deal with, it would most likely not release an inkling of inspiration out of me. Just like you, he always seems to pull things off right at the last minute, and they turn out incredible, as for me, I would probably be a wreck, hehe.
My friends have found it odd in the past, that I am laid-back and care-free in every other area of my life, but when it comes to work, I change and become so disciplined, almost robotic. I may have learned this from my mother, despite other characteristics I am not fond of, I did always like her organised and overtly ethical approach to work.

I've always been lazy and tending to put things off. Whether studying or working I've always left things to the last, always ending up staying up all night before an exam or before a work deadline. It's the way I've always been.

Bring your deadline forward.
I use this technique for being on time.
If I need to leave home at 6pm to be there on time, I aim to leave home by 5.45 at the very latest. Then I usually make my 6pm deadline.
So, if your exam is next Friday then aim to be prepared as if your exam was on Wednesday, then you have two days up your sleeve to do more study if you need to.
We can fool ourselves so easily this way. It works for me in any case.
