Based on a series of US Supreme Court interpretations of the First Amendment, churches and other religious institutions enjoy major tax exemptions that are not available to secular charitable organizations.
Until the Supreme Court reinterprets the First Amendment, those interpretations determine how and when government may interact with religious institutions through taxation.

Can't imagine why this question was deleted, but my brother and I have this conversation all the time. I think taxing the various churches will only lead to even more religious intrusion into political discourse and public policies. I say let them have their opulent facilities and multimillion dollar parking garages...I'm personally tired of organized religion having the impact that it does in modern society.

Love the first answer you got.
Religion and churches can get their noses into government, trying to create and change policies (gay marriage, abortion, prayer in schools, etc.) but shriek at the mere mention of taxes.
You cannot have it both ways.

You got it Cecil
Plus, the more you tax a church, the less they return to the community outreach...... truly charitable churches anyway.
Am I confused about Cecil's answer, or is Henry?

As soon as they make political views public they should loose their tax exempt status.

How nice of you, MOST churches are not like the ones you see on TV, they are modest and give buttloads to the community - how wonderfully nice it is for you to want to take from the community and charity to give to the government.

When they lobby. As far as I'm concerned, that is political action.
