a circular saw is use for making straight accurate cuts whereas a jig saw can be used to make irregular cuts as in scroll work, etc.

With a circular saw, the blade is great for long straight cuts. A jigsaw is good for cutting pattern shapes. Also, in some cases (such as cutting out a chunk in the middle of a sheet of plywood for drawer openings) your jigsaw has the advantage because it cuts straight up and down. The circular saw always ends interior cuts at an angle.

In these cases, it is handy to have both, because the long fast cuts can be done with the circular saw and the corners with the jigsaw.

There is a world of difference between a jig saw and a jig saw puzzle. One is a saw and the other isn't. Others have pointed out what they do, but I don't see anyone else mentioning that there are two types of mitre saws. There is an electric power mitre saw and a hand mitre saw. The hand mitre saw has finer teeth than a regular hand saw and is maybe 18 inches long. It's made to slide into the slits of a mitre box which can cut angles of boards for trim, picture frames or other pieces of wood needing smooth, angle cuts.

Circular saws have round blades and are made for making straight cuts. Jigsaws have straight thin blades that are made for cutting curved shapes on wood and plastic. The jigsaw blade moves up and down while the circular saw blade turns on a shaft.

A circular saw has a round blade that spins around, and is used for cutting straight lines.
A jigsaw has a small, easily replaceable straight blade that reciprocates; that is, it goes back and forth like a hand saw. It is better for making curved cuts.
There is also a heavy-duty version of the jigsaw, called a reciprocating saw and known generically as a "Sawzall" which is a trademark of the Milwaukee Tool, the originator of the design. It uses larger blades than a standard jigsaw, and blades are available to cut any material imaginable.
The Sawzall is a jack of all trades; useful for just about any cutting chore but not optimum for any of them.
