I'm Japanese and I think it's cool that lots of people like Japan. I also think that it shouldn't be a reason for them to start imitating Japanese people. I mean, many modern media culture aspects find their way into other countries at stellar speed and it's absolutely no problem for people to be interested in it. But it'd be nice if everyone understood that we're not super different or anything; there are subcultures, like gyaru style, and the attitudes associated with them - but this is just like it is anywhere else. In America (and most likely everywhere in the world), you have people who consider themselves 'ghetto' and 'preppy' and 'punk', etc. It's the same in Japan. Most of them are normal like any other person on Earth, and if you try and overdo the mimicking... I don't know, you could get mixed reactions. Some people might feel proud and think it's cute that foreigners want to blend into their culture. At the same time, others might take it as an offense. Making peace signs when taking pictures is something that a LOT of girls seem to be doing these days - it's also not limited to Japan; many Chinese and Korean and American and guys/girls of other ethnicities like doing it too. So you don't have to consider that as a behavior expected of a typical Japanese girl. I suggest that if you want to make friends with other Japanese people, just be yourself. Present yourself to them as you normally are. Learn the language, if you want to. And then you'll have no trouble communicating, and they'll love you for YOU and not the Japanese-wannabe that they'd be dealing with otherwise.

Japanese girls along with most women in Japanese culture have many characteristics ingrained in to them in accordance to society rules. Their for, polite and not outspoken is better. A good mother and good cook IS a characteristic. (for yonger girls) In front of people they act polite and conservative, but when they get home, they often are the average annoying sister etc.
When you ask for personality traits, the average Japanese girl is much like an American in the present American culture mixed with the Japanese "robot-like politeness".
I hope some of this made sence.

Typical Japanese girls are not opinionated as compared to typical American girls. But that doesn't mean that they don't think but they just don't say things to people so much...well...to the people who are not their close friends.
That's all I can think of right now...

They like purikara(photo sticker booth) and going to Karaoke with friends. I mean both of these are kind of popular among the Japanese girls. When taking a photo, they may show the "peace" pose. For speaking, you can hear they speak kawaii a lot. Some may have Japanese accent when speaking English and are shy. Generally they like those kind of small cute stuff and you can actually see a lot of tiny stuff in Japan. When going out you can find majority of them with a brand name clothing or accessory such as Gucci, Bulgari and etc.

Most are very smart, because the Japanese school system standard is much higher than here in the United States.
Most girls have shaggy haircuts. A lot like to dye their hair a red-brown color or get perms. I don't know about Tokyo, but in most other places, schoolgirls don't wear heavy make-up. Contrary to popular belief, most teenage girls don't dress TOO slutty (but then again, I'm not sure about Harajuku).
They're obsessed with Hello Kitty and other cute, "childish" things. They love to listen to American music, even if they don't know what the words even mean.
And two words: CELL PHONES. Cell phones are used instead of the internet in most parts of Japan, so they communicate with text. They're many kinds of cell phones and charms to put on cell phones.
