The expression, "Cats have nine lives" is said because cats can fall from high places and land on their feet. They are resilient when fighting something and recover well from injury.
BTW: The electric cord: there are electric cord protectors on the market that will prevent your pet from chewing through the cord.
I am sorry that happened. It is not fun to lose a pet. Best wishes and please go get another pet soon. I am sorry that you lost yours.
....... Matthew.

sorry to hear, but here is the orgin of it, which was your question...
A Cat Has Nine Lives
One theory on the origin of this expression is that in ancient times nine was a lucky number because it is the Trinity of Trinities. As cats seem able to escape injury time and time again, this lucky number seemed suited to the cat. While in most countries the cat is said to have nine lives, in Arab and Turkish proverbs poor puss has a mere seven lucky lives and in Russia, is said to-survive nine deaths.

I'm sorry for your loss.
From the wikepedia website I found that, "Some witches were purported to have the ability to shape-shift into a cat nine times, hence the archaic belief that cats have "nine lives"[citation needed]. Black cats were sometimes used in magical rituals, sometimes as purported participants, other times as sacrifices.[4]"

Ouch!..Sorry to hear!
I guess there's that myth of their 9 lives, because they always seem to land on their feet no matter how far they fall from.
Guess no one thought about electric cords when creating the myth.

I'm sorry about your cat.
I think one of mine is living on borrowed time, he's been through several of his lives already. He seems to have a death wish!

I'm so sorry. Maybe your cat defied death 8 other times that you didn't know about. My cat got into so many cat fights and he finally got killed, so who knows? Good luck, ;)
