Bourne and Geary I do not mind them giving up so much. But Costanzo is a very good prospect and the phillies need a good third basemen and I think we could just keep Meyers as the closer.

Lidge has a great upside. At 30, he's still pretty young and he's a bona fide closer. This year was better for him than last year (3.36 ERA, .219 BAA and 19 saves), despite the Astros poor finish. He'll probably do pretty well in Philadelphia.

Bourn is the real plum for the Astros. Hunter Pence is pretty good at the place for them in centerfield, but he's probably a better fit in right field, which is where the Astros want to move him. Bourn could be a star in the making -- it's a risk trading a good closer for an unproven centerfielder, but Bourn's probably worth it.

The others in the trade -- Bruntlett, Geary; and Costanzo -- are pretty much throw-ins. I've never been a big fan of Geary -- he generally is a 4+ ERA, 1.4+ WHIP and .280 BA type of set-up man. He might have a great game, but he also might break your heart.

Bruntlett is a journeyman -- he's stayed with the Astros since 2003, but I'd expect him to leave the Phils within 3-4 years (at most).

Costanzo might actually be a bigger prize than most people figure. He's listed as the "minor leaguer" without a name in a lot of reports, but he hit 27 home runs for Reading last year. He was a good college player at Coastal Carolina (45 HRs in three seasons), but he has consistently improved as he's advanced through the minor league ranks. The Astros could use some third base help, so you might see Costanzo moving up to help there in the near future.

Overall, I think the Phils benefit on the front end. But this trade could really help the Astros a ton in two or three years.

People keep asking this question...and nobody has the answer right now because they aren't playing. Wait till May or June then ask if it was a good trade. If Lidge is giving up bombs and blowing games left and right, no it won't be a good trade. But as of November 2007, it looks like a good deal. Myers was a shaky closer and they need him to pitch 200+ innings as a starter, not 70 as a closer. In any trade, you have to give in order to get. Costanzo was probably the main piece in the trade. Bourn is ok and Geary is below average. I don't mind seeing either of them go either. If Costanzo turns out to be the next Mike Schmidt though, I guess they made a mistake. Lets just chill and wait and see.

It's going to be a challenge, because Brad Lidge will have to prove right away that he is tough enough mentally to be able to overcome the kinds of pitfalls that the fans, media, sports talkshows, etc, etc. can provide in Philadelphia that guys don't have to fret about in a more mundane city such as Houston.

The perception with Lidge is that he has yet to fully put that Albert Pujols home run out of his mindset, so being able to fully move forward in what can be a very hostile environment will be a definite battle from the word go.

Still, with that said, I hope it does work for the Phillies.

Great deal for the Phils.
i agree Myers can do the job very well, but this not only gives them a very good closer, but lets them use myers as a starter which is where he is better. this deal puts the phils over the top, will compete with anyone in the NL

Trust me all the Astro fans i know were ready to get him out of Houston cause hes blown so many saves this year. In case ya'll havent noticed he lost his save job 1 month into the season. Yes i will admit i was one of them that wanted him gone but i will miss him. So to answer your question depends what side your on

they aren't much of a loss, but we won't know whether it was a good trade or not until he starts pitching and we see how lidge does in philly

Great move for both if Lidge can get back his game.

I do think it was a smart choice. I don't think that Myers could keep that 9'th inning run-free.
