Does anyone know why four outfielders would be awarded gold golves? i thought only three won.

You're right that there are usually only three winners, but there was actually a tie this season.

There's no indication as to who actually tied for that third spot.

Since all outfielders are dumped into one bin (instead of LF / CF / RF), the top three OF vote-receivers win the three outfield Gold Gloves. But, this year -- first time ever! -- there was a tie between two players for third place (had this occurred for first or second place, no fourth GG would have been necessary).

The two OFs who tied were Rowand and Francouer, from the AP article. But the Gold Gloves do not acknowledge ranking amongst the outfield winners.
