I have owned this printer since August, 2007. Both printer and software have worked great on my 2003 Gateway 2.4 ghz machine. Two weeks ago I f-disked my hard drive, reinstalled windows xp & firefox, downloaded the software via HP's website and when the software installation is almost complete, a fatal error message pops up on screen. I am currently communicating via email with an HP rep, however his advice is not helpfull in resolving my issue. My computer recognizes the printer, but the HP software does not recognize I have 'their' printer and therefore shuts down.

UNPLUG printer from PC
UNINSTALL any installed software for it
Reinstall from CD if you can find it (as it worked before) or from the download (try redownloading it)
DO NOT connect printer to PC UNTIL the driver install asks you to. This way the PC should regognise device WITHOUT looking for the isntaller.

First I would uninstall the downloaded software and then I would reinstall the original software and drivers from the disk that came with the printer. Once you've established that it is up and running, then download updated software and drivers from HP. Remember to disconnect the printer from PC, before you install drivers and software
