Far from a bust. In his first year as starter he was thrown to the lions, which is not a very good idea for a rookie to be thrown into a starting role when you're not ready to be the starter that's why most teams when they draft a rookie qb have a veteran qb to teach him the ropes and start for that year. In this case the 49ers didn't do that and it showed because he had a horrible rookie year.
His second season he got way better and had more confidence in himself and also he had Norv Turner as a Offensive Coordinator, which helped him develop. This year we were 2-2 with him starting then lost the next few games with Dilfer and him coming back form injury. Smith isn't at 100 percent right now which is affecting the team, so is Gore with a bad ankle and the passing of his mother. I think this year will make them an even better team next year, as long as they are able to get a better Offensive Coordinator then Jim Hostler then Smith will be fine. Once he's 100 percent and it's not like the 49ers are out of the playoff hunt if they win against Seattle on Monday they're only a game out and anything can happen. I'm hoping the long week will get Gore healthy and Smith healthier. Smith is only in his 3rd year never had to deal with an injury until this year and we will see how well he handles the situation and what he'll do for next year if we continue to have the crappy playcallling from Hostler.

For being a # 1 overall pick? Yes, I'd say he is. He can't stay healthy and even when he is out there he's not making anything happen. Not quite Ryan Leaf type bust, but in 2/3 years he very well could be out of football altogether.

Give him some time. He might be like roethilisberger. He is bad one year but he comes back and starts to win.
