Giving all future Presidents the power of the Line Item Veto.
During Bill Clinton's third year as President, he was given line item veto power by the then newly empowered Republican Congress. That power forced both the President and the Congress to make sound decisions.
Congressmen could no longer attach amendments to bills in order to force the President to sign or veto a bill and the President was forced to actually review an entire bill to eliminate pork.
While Clinton had line item veto power, the country really moved ahead because politics as usual could no longer affect the bills that went before the President and forced both parties to actually work together. When the Supreme Court ruled the Line Item Veto as unconstitutional, we went back political trickery in order to pass or kill a bill.
The line item veto would force both the President and the Congress to do the right thing regardless of party affiliation because then the American People would see EXACTLY who is looking out for our interests.

Great question.
Unfortunately, I don't have a great answer.
Among those issues of importance to me are:
National security. Border security.
Staying firm in Iraq. We appear to be making progress.
Abortion. It's murder
Economy. I don't want a socialist USA
Our culture. It's becoming more and more polluted.
Education. Our sytem is overly expensive, failing and leaning far too much to the left.
Judicial appointments: We need judges and justices who won't legislate from the bench.
Defense: We need to remain strong.

A muscular monetary policy. Money makes the world go around. Money can buy a border fence and defense. Money can provide aid to those in need. Money that is taken from the people, and squandered by the government, is what I want to stop. The rest of the issues can come up later, and hopefully get resolved.

Peak oil--I'm looking for the candidate who is realistic and honest about how diminishing oil will affect our society. No leader can come up with solutions to a problem if they're not even acknowledging it and no one seems brave enough to say that we can no longer continue our car dependence.

The economy. I want a president that will make America's economy flourish. I am tired of hearing talks about credit problems and other financial issues. I'd like a president that is financially educated.

The total irresponsiveness of our leaders in washington to the people, and the law of the land, in particular the constitution. They should be stopped, rounded up, tried and made to pay, or account for their failure. We need to go back to every living member of this travesty caricature of government, and get them also, if only to show " We mean business" , and not primarily for revenge, but mainly for the sake of justice.
