If the cost of space exploration worries you, consider this. It has been estimated that every dollar the U.S. government has invested in NASA has generated, either directly or indirectly, between six and seven dollars in long-term general economic growth. Translated into personal income, that's more than enough even to generate the tax revenue to recover the original dollars invested. From an economic standpoint, NASA is the closest that government has ever come to creating a perpetual-motion machine!
How is this possible? The fact is, space exploration doesn't simply produce flags on the Moon and pretty pictures of Saturn's rings, as many people suppose. It also fosters the development of many useful technologies which otherwise would evolve only very slowly, if at all. We can thank space exploration for many modern developments, without which our current quality of life would be much less agreeable than it is.

It isnt America that is ruining the earth. It is consumers like you who dont pay attention to everything that is going on. Do you drive a car that burns gas? Do you buy a new car every year or two? Do you buy the biggest gas guzzling vehicle just cause you have the money to pay for all that gas?
The true killers of the continent are the rich and greedy. The problem is politicians that rub each others peckers and give each other what they want. MORE MONEY. And the people I mentioned above are only supporting them.
STOP buying these new cars for $30k that dont last for 30 years.
STOP buying these new cars that get less then 50mpg, cause they are capable of making them.
What ever happened to the geo that came out that got over 50mpg? why did they stop selling them. EVER WONDER?
Give me a car that gets over 50 mpg. that can hold 5 or more people in it. that will last for 50 years. that doesnt use oil or gas. that can burn 100% alcohol. that doesnt cost $50k.
going into space is a needed program. Some day our sun will engulf Mercury and Venus and kill life on earth. Some day we will need to space travel in order to survive as a species. It all make perfect sense if you would get past the blinding lies that religion has taught you. However I do believe we could work alot harder to keep this planet a livable place. Dont hate the program, hate the idiots who exploit the other idiots.

Hardly. Who EXACTLY would escape?! A shuttle can only carry about 7-9 people, more if they replaced payload with a passenger module. At that rate, yeah, humanity will "escape" the polluted earth forever! LOL. Sure....
" spend so much " ? How ignorant...NASA's budget is barely 3 PERCENT of the Military budget! Or something like that. Yet the rate of scientific information, and spin-offs from the research contribute back more than any other government program in existance. How many spin-offs from the military can YOU count on your hand that make it to civilian life? In the Apollo days, you can count on things like small portable calculators ( they used to cost 100's of dollars, now you get them free on solar-powered credit card sized wafers ), medical advances in monitoring devices, new materials invented to do something never before done. People who slam the space program are very ignorant, because they don't know, or ignore, all the good that comes out of it ( and NASA doesn't "preach" or advertise it's usefulness, which might help it get more budget dollars.)
Man may destroy his own House on Earth, but it has nothing to do with the space program. Although, with the population growing, it may need to be capable of going out into space to survive in the long term.

Whoever gets into space first controls it, then they have automatic control over the rest of human history. For a long time I as an American went along with the idea that our country, our society, our culture, were the logical choice to carry on the expansion of the human race throughout space and the rest of time. Now I am sure it is NOT. This is a fundamentally defective culture, it could not have brought Mr. Bush to power if it were not fundamentally, basically flawed. So I am actually kind of relieved that Mr. Bush has bankrupted the US and made it impossible for it to influence future history in the long run. It can screw things up for another century or two here on Earth but then it will dissapear into history as a forgotten relic.

The best answer was given by Meep, with whom I fully agree. And to the person who said that America probably pollutes less than any other country...well, I hate to burst your patriotic bubble, but it just isn't so. There ARE organizations in America, bless them, who are concerned with reducing our carbon footprint and with becoming more self-sufficient, but those groups are the exception rather than the rule. As a nation, we're still one of the top producers of waste on Earth, and we will be as long as we enjoy our extravagant lifestyles.
Not that I'm bashing America, mind you. I live here and I'm glad of it, but even in my own lifestyle I see so many things that I could be doing differently to positively affect the environment

your obviously not American. so go be an ignorant piece of **** somewhere else. you obviously have no idea about all the organizations, groups, and companies that are trying to cut down on co2 emissions and pollutants. weve developed a car (for commercial sale, not just an experiment) that doesnt run on gas, none at all. the first ever car of its kind commercially sold. has your country done that? so stfu. even little things are being done to stop wasting energy and polluting the earth. so next time you accuse America of something think first. your country is probably polluting earth more than us.

One being the first and the best give us prestige. Also those who conquer space first have a economical and strategic military advantage. Also there is scientific advantage of space that we are learning and adapting to keep our technological advantage in the world
