like the days of the week to fly, or the best place to book tickets online, we were thinking of going in march. we live in Iowa and would like to fly out of Cedar Rapids, or Waterloo, also is it truely cheaper to book the hotel and airfare at the same time?

In general you are better off booking early but if you fly Southwest, sometimes the fares go down the closer you get to departure date. It all depends on how many tickets they are selling. I've waited for fares to drop several times with Southwest and fares actually went down. The ticket agent says that they usually do fare changes on Tuesdays so if the cheeper fares are gone, recheck their website on Tues/Wed and you might get it for less.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest days to fly. Thursday and Friday are the most expensive to fly in, and Sunday and early Monday the most expensive to fly out.

The two to three weeks before Christmas are the cheapest time of year to go to Vegas. Starting December 30th to the end of January - it is not. (NYE is a HOT time of year to go, and then January has this huge electronics convention that starts loading in the week between Xmas and NYE, and conventions often jack up prices in the city.)

It's sometimes cheaper to book them together. Most people don't have time to shop rates, so they just do it. Compare a few and see what works for you.

Here's a few sites to get you started:
For packages: www.vegas.com <--- thru USair and the cheapest packages I've found yet
For airfare: www.sidestep.com <-- searches all published fares
For hotel only: www.mgmmirage.com <--- you can link to all the MGM Mirage owned properties, which is most of them

Weds. are usually the cheapest fares. Check www.sidestep.com and the can find the lowest fares and hotel rates listed on the web. But also check Southwest because they don't share booking with anyone else. You can check package deals at sidestep also. But they usually give the best price on weird flight times. Just be careful. Airfare is tricky and with the price of fuel up .... tickets prices are going to be high.
