Because everyone assumes they can't win, since historically they almost never have, and thus figure they would be wasting their votes. Therefor, people look at the "lesser of two evils" candidate rather than the one who's views most closely align with their own. This is partly a result of having two entrenched parties, and partly a function of how our government is set up. In other countries, where they have parliamentary systems, many different parties are represented, but once in parliament they have to form coalitions with other parties to get enough of a majority to get anything done. We've bypassed that by simply lumping everybody into two parties that encompass a variety of viewpoints.

Third party candidates are always disregarded. They have never even come close to winning the presidency. In order for a president to be effective they have to have a political party behind them.

Because they believe that a third party candidate could not win an election, so they vote for what they believe is the lesser of two evils and pick one of the standard candidates.

Does the third party candidate really have a chance, or do they steal votes from a top tier candidate? Third party person usually spells doom for the democrats.

What third party? Green? That is dem extreme. Libertarian or reform? They are republican by different name. Third parties at this time are off shoots of the main parties but with maybe a few differences. A true third party has not emerged.

The two major parties tend to weed out the oddballs and crazies along the line; the third parties exist to promote oddballs and crazies.

Because they know the 3rd party doesn't stand a snoballs chance in hell, so why bother? Anyway, we don't really need a 3rd party; Everything is attainable within the 2 party system.

The people who voted for Nader in 2000 were responsible for putting Mr. Bush in office. Thank them for the war and the economy and the Constitution in the toilet. You are much better off voting for one of the national parties otherwise you are just throwing your vote away.
