Anyway it depends on information you are seeking for. But as a general purpose search engine Google is the winner, because it is have the largest library ever.

altavista finds a lot of stuff that other search engines like Google or Yahoo miss.

google was rated best, but if you use goodsearch.com you can earn money for a charity. It is run through yahoo (the second top rated) so you know it's good.

I use google, it's the one probably most known and has loads of searches.
If not that, I use ask.
