Answer = 17,000,000
7/13 of 13/17 = 7/17
13/17 - 7/17 = 6/17
2/3 of 6/17 = 4/17
6/17 - 4/17 = 2/17 = 2,000,000
Therefore, 17/17 = 17,000,000

The will of an eccentric millionaire reads as follows: "I leave 4/17 of my estate to my son. 7/13 of the remainder to my wife, 2/3 of this remainder to my daughter and the remaining $2,000,000 to my dog" What is the total amount of the estate?
Ok since they keep saying of the remainder I think u’ll have to work backwards
So if the daughter got 2/3 of the remainder the 2 mil is 1/3
So 3/3 = 6mil
That 6mil is the remainder after the wife got so it is 6/13
So 6/13 is 6mil
so 13/13 = 13mil
and that 13 mil is the remainder after the son got so that is 13 /17
13/17=13 mil so 17/17 = 17 mil
so the total estate is $17,000,000

Remaining after son = 1 - 4/17 = 13/17
Wife = 13/17 x 7/13 = 7/17
Remaining after wife = 13 /17 - 7/17 = 6/17
Daughter = 6/17 x 2/3 = 4/17
Remaining after daughter = 6/17 - 4/17 = 2/17
2/17 of estate = 2000000
whole estate (= 1) = 2000000 /(2/17) = 2000000x17/2
Total amount = 17 000 000

Ok let's forget about the millions for now.
2 to his dog, which is 1/3 of the last remainder, meaning the remainder was 2/(1/3) = 2*3 = 6
6 to dog+daughter, which is 6/13 of the previous remainder, so the remainder was 6/(6/13) = 13
and so on: 13/(13/17) = 17 mill
4 to his son
7 to is wife
4 to his daughter
2 to his dog

$17,000,000
let the total equal 1 for now. 4/17 of it is left to his son, so 13/17 is left. multiply 13/17 by 7/17 to calculate the amount given to his wife and subtract that by 13/17 (what was left after giving some money to his son). He now has 6/17 of his original estate left. Multiply 6/17 by 2/3 to find the amount given to his daughter and subtract that from 6/17 to find what's left. You should get 2/17 as the remaining fraction left to his dog. Use cross multiplication to calculate the original amount left (2/17=2000000/original amount; (17x2000000)/2=original amount; original amount=$17000000
Hope you got all that!

x = total estate
4x/17 --> Son
13/17 *7/13 = 7x/17 --> Wife
6/17 *2/3 = 4x/17 --> daughter
So 2x/17 goes to dog
2x/17 = 2000000
2x=34,000,000
x = $17,000,000 = total estate value

work it backwards.
1/3 of remainder = $200000 for the dog so
2/3 is $400000 for daughter. So that's $600000 so far.
7/13 of rem to wife means that there is 6/13 for daughter and dog.
$600000 is 6/13 or 1/13 is $100000 so 7/13 is $700000.
so we have 700000+600000=1300000 is 13/17ths so 1 17th is 100000.
so we started with 17000000
4000000 to son
7000000 to wife
4000000 daughter
2000000 dog

let the total estate be x;
son's share=4/17x
remainder=x-4x/17=13x/17.
wife's share=7/13x13x/17=7x/17
remainder now=13x/17-7x/17=6x/17
daughter's share=2/3x6x/17=4x/17.
remainder now=6x/17-6x/17=2x/17
2x/17=2000,000
x=$17000000
