I had to look up what this was (I thought this was another sushi question). I think furniture should be arranged so that people feel comfortable coming into your home. I'm not sure about the placement using directions, like the chairs must face the East. I just know that when I'm sitting on a chair, I don't like the sunlight hitting me in the eyes.

I think we should consider where did Fen Shui come from?
Fen Shui raised from far-back chinese legend and religion, for example, Fen Shui masters always say the house door should face water(sea, river, rill and so on) and back against hills, and windows are same.
It's no reason, nobody can explain that using scientific theory, it's only a tradition or people's habit, and any other things that u want to call it.
But, some of Fen Shui's ceremonialism was demonstrated by modern science, keep on talking about the sample above, now, we know if we did as Fen Shui's request, house face water and back against hill, every moring, vapour raised from water will flow to hill through your house, keep your breathing clear, at night, oxygen concentration on hill is high than it's on water surface, the oxygen flow to water through your house, and it's helpful for your sleep.
See, like an old chinese said " Fen Shui, Fen Shui, should not be doubt should not be trust"!

I don't know because I haven't found an easy book to understand or enough to know how to counterbalance things when I can't set things up perfectly. But I do believe there are places where you feel more comfortable sitting etc. It wasn't fung shui where I discovered that.....think it was Carlos Cansteneta or something like that. I can't do my bedroom in the proper fung-shui method because of where the windows are. When I do....I can't sleep....same as the placement in the living room. Now it could be my own misunderstanding of the rules......I don't know. I wouldn't mind a professional opinion though.........I'll give anything a shot.

It is not magical. It is a matter of making a person feel comfortable.
A person who is comfortable will hopefully be of a better outlook.
For example, some of the principles of Feng Shui are common sense. Sit near a window....of course, you would want light, right?

get 5 experts on the subject, pay them to come in and give recommendations, and you will have 5 different "only way it can be dones" before you are finished. You are better off hiring an interior decorator that you can afford..you will achieve the same, if not better results, and it will be designed ot fit your house and family...probably the most pleasant looking way it can be done...Do I believe in it? NO...it is nothing but common sense and good design. Hell, most houses have very few layouts that work anyway. I certainly am not spending good money to have someone come in and tell me I MUST do this or all my energy will fall out the front door...hell, that happened years ago..so what's the diff? Phil

One of my FAV subjects!
YES - I do believe it works. For years my children and friends teased me because of my penchant for placement of furniture and other things [plants, water features, art/artifacts] and my need to have metals, wood, natural elements in my home. I would go ballistic if something were moved and placed in an area I thought not conducive to my needs.
I had NO idea about fen shui...then one day ran across an article about it - read it and discovered [after I did the 'layout' test of what they recommended] that my home had been instinctively set up to comply with their recommendations!]
It brings me inner peace and through it my home is my own personal haven.

I think if you believe it works, then it does.
I can't rearrange my house so that the stairs don't face the door, and I can't plant a bit of red in the northeast corner of each room. I have brick red carpet in the living room, but that's the extent of it.
I believe that if the heart is happy, the home will be, too, regardless of what elaborate contortions you go through to make the house happier for the people in it.

I have a book on Feng Shui. Most of it is common decorating sense anyway. It works if you think it works.

NO, It's like paying a interior designer, to TELL YOU, how and what you should have in your own home.Put this here and put this there and you will have harmony. I don't think so. A home should be what you like and dislike, where you want to put it or not.
Some people like all white walls, some people want color on their walls, some people want pastel colors, some people want darker colors. To each his own. I don't need somebody telling me what I should and should't like.
