What a task, huh?
My mother worked almost 25 years doing just that. Our family, both sides - all grandparents and ancestors have been here since the late 1600's. They didn't arrive in grand style but were mostly indentured servants, ship jumpers or those escaping some disaster "over there". In addition, most of the early ancestors married into 3 or 4 Indian tribes as well as having nonIndian wives. We are from the Indian side of things.
She did a wonderful job and we can trace back all the way with only about 4 holes in the line. It's those holes I am trying to fill in. All I can say is thank goodness those "white folks" were nuts about record keeping.
Good luck to you. It is so much fun..and it's exciting to find out about yourself and your family.

I started this once, ordered the Family Tree, came with ss records, etc. Got back 3 generations and ended up in Germany...do you have any idea how many Brandt s there are in Germany? Well, I didn't until I went into that game. If you have any older/old realatives who have memories, take a tape recorder and spend the time digging through their memories..that is a better source than anything you will find..from there you will have much better directions. I am quite sure I am descended from nothing but trash and horse thieves..so why bother! Goldwing

Yes, for the fun of it and because I am somewhat of a history nut. Managed to get into the 1600's on my father's side and the late 1400's on my mothers. The results were a surprise, both because I could trace back that far, and because I was expecting to find mostly what people used to call "poor white trash" and turns out both sides were really somewhat upper class.

You may want to check out Amazon.com for the series of books called "The _______ Name in History". They say they do a very in-depth study of of the last name with several data bases. I also saw on the news last night about a site that is called FamilyTreeDNA.com or FamilyTree.com that use DNA ( swap of inside of your mouth) for checking for ancestors that go back many generations. Can be as expensive as $100 - 1500. I am seriously going to try both of these. Hope this is helpful!

My cousin on mom's side put together a book with my ancestors coming from England between 1600-1700. I'm the 13th generation from 1 of 3 brothers who came to America.
I'm trying to find more information about my dad's side of the family. He died when I was small so I don't have much info.

I personally never have but did get info from a relative on my dads side. Back to when they immigrated here from Germany. It was very interesting.....tons of relatives named George Washington and then our last name. Nobody famous.....just regular people. A few preachers tossed in, water witch (lol), all served in wars, no-one wealthy....got picks of the cabin my dad was born in. People bought the land and refurbished it back to it's natural state as a project. Not to mention actual old time pic with the glass negative. Nothing from my moms side yet......

Members of my family have, and they have gone back to the mayflower, on one side.
I keep getting offer for a book that traces mine, and even offers a family crest, well actually it offers the choice of several family crest, all of them seem to be 2 joker facing each other, in one form or another, so I guess that I come by it honestly.

My cousins, Mormons, have traced one side of the family back to 1600. Mostly English and Dutch. Keep looking on line, you will find all kinds of info on your family name, if not your actual family. Good hunting.

I've tried...it's been a really rough haul!...mostly due to many of my ancestors being native americans of tribes I've had difficulty finding. I am now currently trying to trace my Irish grandmother's family - also difficult due to their family being split up during the potato famine.
The African side also is hard....most having lost their' identities' when placed in slavery. Despite "Roots" it AIN'T that easy to trace that ancestory at all.
