I need to rebuild the carburetor on my riding mower. Have you done one before? Is it easy? Does it come with directions? Do i need special tools? Im pretty handy. Should I just pay someone else to do it? Can i just take the carburetor in, rather than the whole mower?

Wish you would have included the make of the motor on your mower and the brand of carburetor. There's really not much in a lawnmower kit. It depends how fussy you decide to be when you overhaul it. NAPA, Carquest and other auto parts stores sell gallon cans of carburetor cleaner that you can soak the main body in overnight. If you don't want to spend the money, go to Walmart and buy a couple of aerosol cans of Berrymans Carburetor Cleaner.
#1. Remove the float-boul on the bottom of the carburetor holding it as near horizontal as possible.
#2. Carefully slide out the pin that supports the needle valve and float.
#3. If the kit comes with a new needle seat, remove it and install the new one. Some are pressed in and the only way to spin them out is with slightly larger outside diameter drill bit than the inside diameter of the seat.
#4. If you feel you don't want to pull this off, spray carb. cleaner into the seat hole. Also spray back through the main metering jet hole. They are either on the side of the main body of the carb or the very bottom.
#5. Spray the main body inside and out till clean. Spray the float boul till it's clean.
#6. Install the new seat if necessary.
#7. Shake the float be sure its light weight and emty of fuel. Replace the float if it's heavy. Floats do not come with basic carb kits.
#8.Slide needle into the seat. Occasionally the needle comes witth a clip to lold it on the tab on the far end nerat the flot hanger. Slide the Needle hanger pin / float piviot hanger back through the main body holes near the needle seat.
#9.Bolt the carb bact on yhe intake manifold or cylinder block. Hang all linkage back on.
#10. Turn the needle jet screw carefully in till it seats. Turn out two turns. Start the mower and let it idol a couple of minutes. Turn throttle to maximum RPM. Make final carb. adjustment by turning the screw in slowly till the motor rpm. drops off slightly. Open the adjustment 1/2 - 3/4 of one turn. RPM's will pick up for maximum power.

Most carburetor kits have a drawing of where the parts go. I don't think they tell you exactly how to rebuild it. You may be able to find an engine repair manual that covers the carburetor for your engine. Try your local mower repair shop for that or on line.

Lawn mower engines are one of the simplest engines to work on, once you have worked on a few you will be confident working on any mower engine. You may also try having the mower repaired at your local repair shop. This way if there is a problem they take care of it instead of you doing the work over and over again till you get it right.

Best of luck...Hope this helps...

THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM WITH A LAWN MOWER CARBURETOR IS A DIRTY NEEDLE AND SEAT.

IF YOU REMOVE THE FUEL BOWL YOU CAN JUST TAKE IT OUT AND CLEAN IT WITH LIKE BRAKE CLEANER IN A SPRAY CAN AND REINSTALL IT.

IT WILL LOCATED NEXT TO THE FLOAT, GIVE IT A TRY BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOOSE.

GOOD LUCK
