in most Western countries, land records are open to the public. In the advanced parts, both property tax and sale records are available over the Internet.

however, nicely aggregrated and analyzed information is usually proprietary and you have to pay for that. Accessing it is "free" when using an estates agent [realtor in US] but the cost is included in the commissions and fees.

If the local tax assessor is online, you could access public records of home sales on line, but many are not websited yet.

Most city halls are published on line now a days. Just search fr the city you are looking for through yahoo and see what comes up. I know all cities in my state are on line.
