I think the American people need to come togtherby themselves not by the leadership of a politician.

Collectively, the whole country turn off the talking heads on the TV along with radio, turn off sound bite and tabloid journalism and start using our common sense.

It amazes me how much we let our heads get filled up with garbage from both sides of the isle when it is very apparent that all it does is produce gridlock and divisiveness.

Unfortunately, our human nature won't allow that till something catastrophic happens. The last time that happened was on 911 and the president, instead of choosing to unite the country, he chose to further divide the country. Then allowed this country to be swiftboated into making more bad choices.

I wish people would understand the above. Life would be so much easier if we did. Instead, as Confucius said, “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

I'm so sick of it that, that was one of the reasons I decided to get out while I had my chance.

Peace

Jim

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power- only then will the world truly know peace."

I can't remember who this quote came from but it always struck me as being the absolute truth. The rich keep getting rich, and the poor keep getting poorer. There is such a disparity between people who have WAY too much and those who can barely get by. Our government as it stands is NOT a fair and equal representation of who we are as a nation. How do you become an elected official at the level of our Senators or House of Representatives......money, and gross amounts of it. An Ivy League education doesn't hurt your chances either. You see my point; the very people making decisions for us are the true minority. I think we will have to take a good hard look at the amount of work it's going to take to stimulate the necessary changes.

In the end, we will either unite or fall. Many great nations in history have seen to their own undoing. I just hope we are able to snap out of this before it's too late.

Compromise, plain in simple. People will have to bite their lip over their own political differences and work to fix different issues.
Iraq: You don't have to like the fact we are over there, you don't have to agree with the war. What should be done is to set beliefs aside and find ways to support out military and troops. This can be done without supporting the president. Soldiers, Sailors and Airman are being forced to grow up fast, be separated from family, miss their children's births etc...they give up a lot being where they are. Show support, help out a family member who has a son or husband deployed.
Illegal Immigration: Step back, take a look at the situation. Rather than complain about the illegals, find a way to stop them from crossing. Find a registration policy that makes sense and is fair to the American people as well as those who want to be here. I personally am against them (lots of criminals) but we have to set up some kind of guidelines of what is expected from them and us.

Pearl harbor united America during the Depression and political discontent. The sinking of the RMS Lusitania also played a role in uniting America. 9/11 briefly united America, until Bush went a bit power crazy.

Perhaps America needs something to unite against?

Something that is perceived as a true threat to all Americans where there is only one true and obvious solution, in other words, a miracle.
The problem (and strength) we have is the wide diversity of our society, however the more diverse a society the less likely that society will unify.
I agree with you that we need to come together of our own accord, but I don't see this as likely without something or someone that this unity can coalesce around

Too many people like Rush and Hannity keep fueling the division and talking about how wrong the libs and left are. Then, this causes all the libs and dem's to defend their views, which makes the rep's and conservatives think we are hating on them. It's an endless cycle of hatred between parties....Unfortunately I think the only thing that will bring Americans together is a huge, devastating event....and I'm not even sure that would work...somehow when the smoke and fog clears....the reps will be blaming again. God is even scratching his head, wondering WTF....

I truly feel Americans were united after the 911 attacks. We put apart our differences when we are threatened.

We seem to come together when we have a common cause.

However, diversity is one thing that makes America a great nation. We can all agree to disagree!

I don't think that's ever gonna happen. There's to many people here from other countries and besides the only true American is one that calls himself by one word "American". Too many people want to add on a word before American and that's unamerican in my opinion!

RESPECT. Right now we are passionate about our beliefs and that is why many people are so resentful and angry. As a Christian I oft times see negative remarks about my beliefs and I appreciate it. If not for the freedom to speak your mind this country would not be republic it is. You can say and believe what you want...er...(within reason ie... the law)...and I truly respect your right to do so.

If we all keep that in mind we will come a little closer in our differences. Peace.

I'm afraid it will take something an order of magnitude greater than 9/11. I really think that that is just about the only thing that will really pull Americans together.
