There are apartments for rent on www.Craigslist.com that you can compare yourself to. There are some areas that are better than others... I would look into the side of town you are choosing... probably not the west side haha. I have been to Muskegan several times, and I prefer Grand Rapids, I have lived here my whole life.

You will get a decent and spacious 1-bedroom apt for $800/month in greater Grand Rapids area. I paid around $700 for a 2-bedroom apt about a year or so ago, and it was in a very nice apartment complex. My guess is that it might be slightly cheaper in Muskegon area, just because it's a smaller town and demands are not as high. If you haven't decided between G.R or Muskegon, my recommendation is to live in North West side of Grand Rapids, areas such as Walker or Comstock Park. You will see more job opportunities and entertainment options as you get closer to G.R. However, If you happen to get a job in Muskegon, no big deal, commute is only 30 minutes tops in the busiest day.

If you are a bit more flexible, may I recommend also to consider the southern west part of Grand Rapids. Check out Wyoming, Grandville, or even Byron Center. They are a little bit ahead as far as economy concerns (many new things are opening: businesses, hospitals, entertainments, etc) yet still relatively affordable.

For apartment listings, I'd recommend www.mlive.com. Click on the "Real Estate" then select "Rent". This website is basically the electronic version of major newspapers in Michigan.

Best of wishes on your move.

You will probably make less and pay less at the same time.

Pull up Grand Rapids Michigan chamber of commerce. That will give you some good info.
